      Overview

      Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is seeking to hire a full-time Associate Director of the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and Muslim Chaplain. This position will contribute to the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (CRSL) mission, which values exploration of wholeness, belonging and purposeful living. The CRSL is part of Macalester Institutional Equity. This position will report to the Chaplain of the College and serve as a key strategic partner across campus. The Assistant Director of the CRSL and Muslim Chaplain will offer vision for and implementation of offerings that contribute to increased interfaith literacy. This position has particular responsibilities to serve as the spiritual teacher to Macalester’s ethnically and culturally diverse Muslim population, offering vision and implementation of offerings that align with the departmental mission.

      This position will serve as a member of a multifaith team; where collaboration and connection across worldviews is expected. A successful candidate will engender support for Macalester’s community, which includes diversity of ability, age, class, gender identity, nationality, race, religion and sexual orientation. Macalester has roots and relationships in the Presbyterian Church and is home to a Chaplaincy that is Multifaith in expression and values.

      Responsibilities

      Muslim Chaplaincy

      • Serve as a Chaplain and religious advisor to Muslim students and Muslim Student Association (MSA)
      • Cultivate relationships that engender personal growth and develop student leadership
      • Provide vision, direction, and guidance for learning circles, Jumu’ah prayers and Halaqua study
      • Promote awareness and understanding of Islamic traditions and cultures across campus
      • Cultivate partnerships within the diverse Muslim communities of the Twin Cities

      General

      • Provide vision and direction for Interfaith initiatives at Macalester College
        • Lead collaborative efforts with the team of Chaplains to create a vision for interfaith learning and worldview exploration that fosters connection across worldviews
        • Creatively open pathways for dialogue that is inter-religious, intra-religious, and is encompassing of cultural practices and identities
      • Ensure support systems provide equitable access for spiritual practitioners
      • Embody enthusiastic spiritual leadership and teaching. This will include thoughtful facilitation of dialogue, meaningful framing of religious, spiritual and philosophical issues, and the ability to hold space for students to explore multiple identities
      • Provide supervision for student Multifaith Program Assistants
      • Provide budgetary management and oversight for interfaith initiatives
      • Provide oversight for management of the Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel
      • Serve as a Chaplain to the campus community, this includes students, staff, faculty and alumni. Commitment to pastoral confidentiality is required. This position is designated as a confidential on campus resource (Title IX).
      • Serve in the stead of the College Chaplain, as requested
      • Prepare spoken remarks, teaching and grounding for college events
      • Author departmental reports and assessment of programs and initiatives
      • Articulate and reflect the values of the CRSL and Institutional Equity. This position will assist with strategic learning opportunities, establish campus partnerships, serve on committees, and collaborate in a manner that positively influences campus culture.

      Qualifications

      Necessary Skills and Knowledge

      • Demonstrated understanding of the role of Chaplaincy within higher education
      • Ability to advance inclusion and equity through the entrypoint of religious literacy
      • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in public contexts and digital forums
      • Ability to provide personal and group spiritual care and counsel
      • Hold room for ambiguity, disagreement, non-resolution and suffering
      • Ability to design large, inclusive rituals, celebrations, and gatherings
      • Be conversant in the diverse religious, social, and cultural expressions within Islam
      • Work in a collaborative and relational manner; balancing student needs and institutional priorities
      • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets for multiple projects and commitments.
      • Evidence of and a commitment to interfaith education, universal design principles, anti-racism, and equity and justice

      Required Qualifications

      • Master’s degree in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, or equivalent is required
      • Pastoral care training, preferably a minimum of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education
      • Demonstrated experience in interfaith spiritual care for diverse populations (ethnic, racial, sexual, gender, cultural, religious, age, ability)
      • Appropriate understanding of boundaries and power in Chaplaincy
      • Training and certifications in circles/restorative processes, preferred
      • Must be available to work some nights, weekends, holidays, special events, and respond to after-hours emergencies
      • Utilizes sustainable practices that promote personal well-being, as a practitioner and teacher
      • Practice empathy and non-judgement consistently

      Physical Requirements:

      This position sits in a building that requires the ability to climb stairs and lift up to 10 lbs.

      Compensation:

      This is a full-time exempt position with a total compensation package that includes an annual salary of $68,000-75,000.
